FAQ
What types of caravans come up at auction?
Pop-tops, full-height vans, fifth-wheelers, camper trailers, motorhomes, and campervan conversions. Sources include insurance write-offs, finance repossessions, rental fleet disposals, and general estate and clearance sales.
Are insurance write-off caravans worth buying?
Sometimes. Many are written off for relatively minor damage that exceeds the insurer’s repair threshold. A thorough inspection of the chassis, walls, and roof is essential but water ingress in particular can be difficult and expensive to fully remedy.
What should I inspect before bidding?
Water damage, delamination, chassis condition, wheel bearings, brake controller, appliance function (hot water, fridge, air conditioning), and awning condition. The underside and wheel arch areas are critical inspection points.
Do caravans come with registration?
Not always. Check whether registration is included in the lot description. If not, you’ll need to arrange roadworthy certification and re-register in your state.
Can I tow my caravan from the auction?
Not always. In many cases, especially Pickles and Manhiem, you’ll need to arrange a flatbed especially if it is listed under a salvage auction. Otherwise, you’ll need a unregistered vehicle permit to move the item out. Before bidding, clarify these points with the auctioneer!
Trends & Insights
Dealers are reporting a pronounced supply squeeze that is directly heating up auction floors across the country. Empty lots are becoming a common sight, with global uncertainty impacting stock sourcing and pushing prices higher for available units (Instagram / The Caravan Place, May 26). This scarcity is translating into competitive bidding, particularly for premium and off-road models which are holding their value strongly in the current climate (Hinterland Caravans, May 24).
Major auction platforms are responding to the demand with active listings. Pickles has opened bidding this week on multiple used caravans, including a 2013 Nova Terra Sportz, with sales scheduled in Bibra Lake WA and South Grafton NSW (Pickles AU, May 26). Meanwhile, IAA Australia has its National Caravan, Boat, and Trailers auction set for May 27, with pre-bidding already live across state locations (IAA Australia, May 23). These events are becoming critical channels for buyers facing depleted dealer inventories.
Despite the heat on auction floors, the broader industry context remains challenging. IBISWorld data shows trailer and caravan dealer revenue has contracted 5.6% annually to $3.3 billion, with only a minor 3.1% lift in the latest year tempering a longer decline (IBISWorld, May 24). This tension between auction price strength and industry contraction suggests a bifurcated market. Entry-level vans are softening with more listings appearing, while recent model and off-grid units remain resilient under strong buyer demand (Hinterland Caravans, May 24).
Buyers should watch the upcoming IAA national auction results this week as a key indicator of whether the premium segment can sustain its current pricing momentum.

Rod’s Tips
Water damage is the number one thing to look for. Run your hand along internal walls and check every corner for soft spots. A van with even minor ingress can deteriorate rapidly if not treated properly. Walk away unless you have the skills and budget to remediate.
Repossessed ex-rental vans are often better value than insurance salvage. Rental fleets are maintained to a schedule. You’re typically getting a well-used but mechanically sound unit, compared to an insurance write-off where the full damage history may not be disclosed.
Pickles runs the most consistent caravan auction volume. Their online rolling sales include a steady supply of mid-range to premium vans from finance and insurance channels and it’s a reliable place to benchmark prices.
Budget for repairs, roadworthy and safety check. Even for a good looking van, just maintaince items alone, such as gas fittings, brakes, wheel bearings, safety chains, etc., can soon add up. Build in the cost of a caravan inspection service into your budget so you have an idea of repair costs before you bid.

National Online Salvage Caravans, Recreational & Marine
More detail
This is a national online salvage sale, so expect everything from repairable write-offs to storm-damaged stock. The standout is the 2024 Jayco All Terrain, barely a year old, which could be a steal if the damage is cosmetic. For water lovers, the 2022 Seadoo Fish Pro is a serious fishing rig, while the 2021 Maverick Ranger and 2017 Aura Titanium offer variety for off-road or touring buyers.
Older units like the 2013 Jayco Starcraft and 2009 Jayco Expanda Outback are ideal for someone chasing a project or cheap parts. There is also a tandem axle enclosed box trailer with no current plates, and a custom trailer thrown in. Bidders should check the salvage classification carefully, as repairs and compliance may vary by state. Close date is June 3, 2026, so you have time to inspect the listings.

7/2021 Network RV Caravan 24ft – Statutory Write-off
More detail
This is a 2021 Network RV Caravan, measuring 24 feet, and it’s classified as a statutory write-off. That means it’s been damaged and is not roadworthy in its current state. But for a buyer with the skills to repair or the need for a donor van, the potential is there.
The van is relatively new, so components like the chassis, cabinetry, appliances, and fittings could be valuable. A statutory write-off can’t be re-registered in Australia, so this is strictly for parts or off-road use. The auction closes on 2 June 2026, so there’s time to inspect or ask questions if you’re serious about a rebuild or salvage.

The standout items are the caravan windows: sizes include W900xH450, W1000xH800, and W1100xH450 models, each priced at $425 to $480 retail. For anyone building or repairing a caravan, this is a straight chance to grab genuine new stock without paying full price. The auction closes on 10 June 2026, so get your bids in early. No reserve drama here, just solid savings on parts that rarely appear at auction brand new.
