FAQ

Do I need to register to bid at ACT auctions?
Yes – every auction house requires registration before you can bid. Most allow online registration up to the morning of the sale but it is recommended to register well in advance in case ID verification is required.

Can I inspect lots before bidding?
Usually, Yes. Preview days are usually held the business day before the auction. Check the individual auction listing for times.

Are there buyer’s premiums?
Yes. Most ACT auction houses charge 15-20% on top of the hammer price, plus GST. Always check the terms at the auctionlevel and on individual items before bidding.

Can I bid online?
Most major houses including the Auction Barn,Grays, Pickles, Lloyds, AllBids all offer live online bidding. In-room only auctions are becoming rarer.

What payment methods are accepted?
Most houses accept EFT and credit card. Some charge a card surcharge (typically 1.5-2%). Cash is rarely accepted for large purchases.

Rod’s Tips

Set a budget before you register. Add the buyer’s premium and GST to your mental ceiling — a $500 hammer down price can easily become $620 once fees are included.

Attend the preview. Photos online are often flattering. Checking condition in person takes 20 minutes and can save you from a costly mistake.

Government and US Embassy disposals are worth watching. ACT government fleet and surplus equipment sales offer often well-maintained and sensibly priced wares.

Don’t bid on the opening lot. Room temperature tends to be highest at the start. Identical items sold later in the same auction routinely go cheaper.

The Auction Barn

The Auction Barn is a Canberra institution, running regular in-room and online auctions from their Fyshwick showrooms at 10 Wiluna Street. Specialties include gems, fossils, militaria, pop culture, fine art, and rugs, all well worth checking for collectors.

  • Fine Spirits (Section A)

    Fine Spirits (Section A)

Fri 14 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 41 lots • The Auction Barn

A solid lineup of bottles is going through auction in Fyshwick, with auctionbarn handling the sale of a private spirits collection. Standouts include a Bundaberg Vat 100 Centenary Rum from 1988, a 1927 Commanderie St. John Cyprus Dessert Wine, and a Wild Turkey Rare Breed bourbon batch from 1994.

    More detail

This is a mixed bag for drinkers and collectors alike. The rare Bundaberg Vat 100, bottled to mark 100 years since the distillery’s founding, is the headline act. It sits alongside a 1927 Commanderie St. John Cyprus Dessert Wine, which is the kind of bottle you don’t see turn up often. For whisky drinkers, there’s a Glenfiddich Cask Strength aged 15 years, a Balvenie Doublewood 12, and a Dimple 15 year old.

The cognac and brandy corner is well covered too, with a Napoleon Bisquit, a Remy Martin VSOP Fine Champagne, and a Hardys XO. Two bottles of Seppelt Para Liqueur, numbered 109 and 106, are also in the mix. If you’re after something a bit different, there are two bottles of Herman Jansen minted chocolate liqueur, which should appeal to anyone with a sweet tooth. The sale closes on 14 August, so give yourself time to sort out your bids.

  • Asian Arts

    Asian Arts

Fri 14 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 47 lots • The Auction Barn

A solid mixed lot of Asian art and antiques is putting up at auctionbarn’s Fyshwick saleroom, closing Friday 14 August. Standouts include two very large Japanese floor vases in Satsuma style, a Korean Goryeo-style celadon vase with crane decoration, and a Chinese doucai porcelain pedestal bowl bearing a Yongzheng mark.

    More detail

This monthly sale leans heavily toward decorative pieces with genuine age, not reproductions. The two large Satsuma-manner floor vases are the obvious headliners, but note one carries a significant repair to the side alongside the usual crazing and surface wear. For collectors, the early 20th century cast metal Chinese wine ewer or teapot is worth a look, with windowed panels depicting Song dynasty life and a base mark attributed to the ‘Yong Shun Lao Dian’ factory. Be aware the tip is bent and some pictorial scenes have faded.

The porcelain section offers depth. The doucai pedestal bowl, with its lotus and wave decoration and apocryphal Yongzheng mark, is in very good nick. The blue and white group includes a tea caddy with a heavily restored lid, so factor that in. Smaller lots include a miniature Cum Shing export silver loom weighing 26.63g, with damage to delicate wires and the silver grade untested, plus a Kashmiri metal planter, a Chinese cloisonné vase, and a Burmese lacquerware dish. The vintage South Asian doll in its display cabinet has some case repairs but presents well. Everything is sold as-is, so inspect the condition notes carefully, particularly for restoration and wobbles on the larger ceramic pieces.

  • Furniture & Interiors

    Furniture & Interiors

Tue 18 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 61 lots • The Auction Barn

A tidy collection of furniture and homewares is up at auctionbarn’s Fyshwick rooms, closing Tuesday 18 August. Standouts include a pair of solid timber black leather armchairs, an antique mahogany tilt-top table, and a Trevor Dunbar oil painting with a Canberra backstory.

    More detail

The furniture side is strong on solid timber pieces with real character. The Victorian chest of drawers with flame-figured veneer fronts is a genuine antique, no key included but the turned knobs and feet are intact. The Asian cabinet with its unusual slide-locking mechanism and copper key is worth a look, though you’ll need to ask at the front office to test it. The round tilt-top table on castors is a practical size for dining or hallways, and the bentwood hat and coat rack in deep forest green is in very good nick.

For lighting, there’s a pair of brushed steel torchiere lamps with touch switches and frosted glass shades, but one weighted base needs repair and they’re untested. The vintage turned timber floor lamp is in working order, with loose joints in the stand worth checking. The Trevor Dunbar painting, ‘Two Daughters-in-Law Holding Mother-in-Law’s Tongue’, was bought at the Canberra Grammar School Art Salon in the 1990s, framed with some gold finish loss at the bottom.

Smaller lots include four bentwood kitchen stools with minor seat wear, a two-seater cream patterned couch with stains, and a solid timber desk in very good vintage condition. The flap-sided trolley with felt-lined cutlery drawer is a handy piece for entertaining. Twelve-plus lots, so get in before the close.

  • Weekly Fine Jewellery & Decorative Arts (Section A)

Weekly Fine Jewellery & Decorative Arts (Section A)

Wed 19 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 38 lots • The Auction Barn

A curated selection of fine jewellery, antique timepieces, coins, and collectables is hitting the block in Fyshwick, with auctionbarn running the sale. Standout lots include a rare sterling silver and crystal inkwell with an oversized 1903 pocket watch mounted in the lid, plus a Perth Mint proof coin set limited to 10,000.

    More detail

The headline piece is that antique inkwell, assay marked for John Grinsell & Sons, Birmingham, 1903. It pairs a hobnail cut crystal base with a hinged English sterling silver neck and lid, and the watch inside winds, ticks, and runs for around 24 hours per the vendor. Two minor fleabites to the base are noted, but overall it presents as very good for its age.

Watch collectors should look at the 14ct gold Georges Favre Jacot pocket watch from c.1890. It’s engraved, has a cream enamel dial with Arabic numerals, and carries an 1889 Paris Exposition marking on the cuvette. Be aware it’s listed for repair or servicing, as the movement only runs briefly when prompted and doesn’t sustain.

Elsewhere, there’s a good run of vintage jewellery: a 9ct gold operculum bar brooch, a 9ct white gold twin pearl ring, and a dragonfly brooch in sterling. The coin cutwork brooches are unusual, one using a 1951 ‘Jubilee of Federation’ florin and the other a New Zealand penny with tui bird detail. The Ming dynasty shard necklace is another point of difference, set in sterling silver. Everything closes on 19 August, with more than a dozen lots in this section.

  • Carnival Glass (Part 4)

    Carnival Glass (Part 4)

Thu 20 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 23 lots • The Auction Barn

A standout single-vendor collection of rare Australian and American carnival glass is hitting the block, with 12-plus lots of serious collector-grade pieces. The lineup features Crown Crystal’s iconic ‘Swan’ and ‘Emu’ bowls in marigold and black amethyst, plus a deep blue Fenton ‘Persian Medallion’ bowl with that glossy purple lustre overlay.

    More detail

This Part 4 offering digs deep into the golden era of carnival glass, pairing the big American names with the local Crown Crystal factory output that Aussie collectors chase hard. The Fenton ‘Persian Medallion’ bowl is the headline act: a very large piece in deep blue with that purple lustre sheen, grape and leaf detailing on the exterior, and tripod feet. It’s in very good nick, which counts for a lot with this pattern.

The Crown Crystal pieces are where the local interest will spike. That black amethyst ‘Emu’ bowl has the butterfly and floral border, and the note about the obscured emu face is factory condition, not damage, so don’t expect a discount on that quirk. There’s also a black amethyst ‘Swan’ ruffle-edge bowl and a ‘Magpie’ marigold bowl with the flannel flower interior, both in very good used condition.

Condition across the board is solid, with the main caveats being some wear to feet on the earlier pieces and a slight surface roughness on the Fenton ‘Chrysanthemum’ bowl. The Imperial ‘Double Dutch’ bowls are a nice pickup for anyone after the landscape scenes with windmills and boats. If you’re chasing a specific pattern or colourway, this is the sort of single-owner spread that rarely comes up in one hit.

  • Single Vendor Carlton Ware & Crown Devon (Section 3)

Single Vendor Carlton Ware & Crown Devon (Section 3)

Thu 20 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 39 lots • The Auction Barn

A solid single-vendor lineup of Carlton Ware and Crown Devon ceramics is hitting the auction block in Fyshwick, with auctionbarn running the sale. The standout is a Carlton Ware ‘Prickly Pansy’ lidded jar from the Handcraft line, plus an antique Torquay souvenir pot dating back to the late 1800s. Expect hand-painted vases, a sugar caster, bookends, and a Crown Devon elephant figurine across the 12+ lots.

    More detail

This one is for collectors chasing quality over quantity. The Carlton Ware pieces cover several sought-after lines, including the ‘Egyptian Fan’ small footed bowl designed by Violet Elmer, sitting on a midnight blue ground, and the ‘Hiawatha’ vase with gilded rim from the Handcraft range. The ‘Rouge Royale’ triangular ashtray with a hand-painted bird motif is an unusual piece that doesn’t pop up often.

The Crown Devon side brings its own charm, with a hand-crafted asymmetric vase on a mottled yellow ground and a ‘Mattajade’ vase featuring stylized coral trees in jade blue. Condition is generally honest vintage, with crazing and minor wear noted across most lots, so factor that into your bidding. The antique Torquay souvenir pot from Wiltshaw & Robinson, c.1894-1926, shows its age with surface wear and decoration losses, but it’s a genuine piece of history.

Bidding closes 20 August. If you’re after a specific pattern or a gift-worthy piece, check the condition notes carefully before you commit. The sugar caster has no stopper, and the bookends show stains and minor losses, so this is a sale for people who appreciate character over perfection.

  • Fine Irish Silver (Front Office)

    Fine Irish Silver (Front Office)

Fri 21 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 24 lots • The Auction Barn

A single-owner collection of fine Irish silver, spanning the 18th and 19th centuries, is going to auction in Fyshwick. The standout is an 1827 William IV sterling silver prize jug awarded to the owners of the racehorse ‘Symmetry’, engraved with its four wins of twenty-five pounds. Also on offer are Georgian and Victorian pieces from the Wray and Boyd families, including a George III sauce boat dated 1773 and a large salver commemorating the 18th-century marriage of Jackson Wray and Leonora Boyd.

    More detail

This is a collection with genuine pedigree, not just a box of old cutlery. The core of the sale is the Wray family service, with crests of an ostrich and horseshoe appearing across dinner forks, spoons, a basting spoon, a salt dish, and a wick trimmer tray. The forks alone span 1807 to 1838, with assay marks from Dublin makers including Philip Weekes, Henry L. Gardner, and James Keating. That kind of documented, multi-generational provenance is what collectors pay attention to.

The Boyd family is also well represented, with a Georgian coffee pot bearing the family crest and motto ‘Confido’, and a salver carrying both Boyd and Atkinson arms. The earlier pieces are the real draw for historians: the 1773 sauce boat attributed to Matthew West, the 1767 London tray with old repaired damage, and the 1765 basting spoon with its flawed ‘WW’ mark. Condition is honest throughout, with minor dents, tarnishing, and surface wear noted, so factor that in if you’re chasing pristine examples.

Weights are listed for every lot, which is useful for scrap value, but the real money here is in the family history and the Irish assay marks. The auctioneer notes the collection has been held by one family since the 1800s. Bidding

  • Fine Art

    Fine Art

Fri 28 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 32 lots • The Auction Barn

A solid lineup of fine art is going under the auctioneer’s gavel at auctionbarn in Fyshwick, with more than a dozen lots of paintings, etchings, and prints on offer. Highlights include a Mark Redzic oil on canvas, a suite of 1970s Keith Looby etchings, and several Tiwi Islands prints from artists like Fiona Puruntatameri and Pedro Wonaeamirri.

    More detail

The Keith Looby etchings are the standout grouping here, with four works from 1976: ‘New Life’, ‘Growth’, ‘First Moon’, and ‘Massacre of Tasmanians’. Each is an edition of 20/50, titled and signed under the plate margins, and they carry the weight of Looby’s reputation as the Archibald Prize winner for his portrait of Max Gillies as Bob Hawke. His etchings illustrating colonial Australia’s darker history are regarded among his most significant output, so this set offers a rare chance to pick up multiple pieces from that body of work in one go.

The Indigenous art section is strong too. Woodinda (Shane) Wallace’s ‘Goanna Hunt’ comes with a certificate of authenticity from Authentic Aboriginal Art in The Rocks, Sydney, while Shorty Jangala Robertson’s ‘Ngapa Jukurrpa’ (Water Dreaming) is a Basil Hall Editions print, with a different edition of the same composition held in that gallery’s collection. Tiwi artists are well represented with works from Janice Pungautiji Murray, Fiona Puruntatameri, Francesca Puruntatameri, and Pedro Wonaeamirri, plus a Rosella Namok etching from Lockhart River.

Condition varies, so check the lot notes. Several Looby pieces show light discolouration, possible foxing, and frame marks, and one has no glass. The Tiwi prints are mostly in very good condition with only minor frame wear

  • Science & Natural History

    Science & Natural History

Fri 28 Aug 2026 • Wiluna Street, Fyshwick • 22 lots • The Auction Barn

A hand carved emu egg signed ‘CD’ leads a 12+ lot Science & Natural History auction from auctionbarn in Fyshwick. It shows dolphins underwater on one side and a carved rose on the other, with some surface fading. Also in the mix: vintage geological specimens from Western Australia, two polished fossil ammonites cut in half, and a Gordon K Hanley galah print from the ‘Jewels of Nature’ book.

    More detail

This auction leans into the weird and wonderful. The emu egg is the standout decorative piece, but the scientific gear might be the real draw. Two M5-Zeichentubus Camera Lucida drawing devices for Wild Heerbrugg microscopes come in original boxes, untested but promising for collectors of vintage lab equipment. A Bacharach ‘Tempscribe’ temperature recorder from the 1960s, with its bakelite case and seven-day paper chart, needs repair but is a rare find for industrial history buffs.

The geological lots are solid. You get a boxed collection of West Coast Australian minerals with original labels, plus two split and polished agate specimens dyed for candle use. The polished ammonites from Madagascar and an orthoceras specimen add fossil appeal. For natural history oddities, there is a taxidermied frog on a wood slice stand and a pair of stone and crystal bird figurines.

The Hanley galah print comes framed with a quote from Neville Connors, linked to the limited edition two-volume book ‘Jewels of Nature’. A rotating globe, a pair of Stellar binoculars, and laboratory beakers round out the lot. Most items show signs of age, and the scientific gear is sold untested with no parts guaranteed. Check the close date of 2026-07-24.

Pickles

Pickles Auctions runs ACT vehicle and equipment sales from two Fyshwick locations including salvage and industrial at Dairy Road, and vehicles and general goods at 179 Gladstone Street.

AllBids

AllBids is Canberra’s leading online auctioneer, running sales from the ACT for over 15 years. Weekly sales include police recovered goods, computers, general goods, and fundraising auctions, all from Fyshwick.

  • Computers & IT Auction

    Computers & IT Auction

    Tue 18 Aug 2026 • ACT • 100 lots • AllBids

A solid lineup of enterprise and everyday computing gear is going under auction in the ACT, with 100 lots closing on 4 August. Expect bulk hard drives, Dell monitors, a late-2012 21.5-inch iMac, Samsung tablets, a Lenovo laptop, and a 48-port PoE+ network switch from HP.

    More detail

The storage lots are the headline act here. You’ve got HP’s 3TB SATA drives in a lot of three, plus a pair of 10TB units: one HGST SAS 12Gbps and one Western Digital Purple Pro, the latter built for surveillance systems. If you’re running a NAS or a small server room, these are worth a serious look, especially if the bidding stays sensible.

On the computing side, the iMac is a Late 2012 model with a Core i5 and 21.5-inch screen, so it’s not cutting edge, but it’ll handle office work or light creative tasks without complaint. The Lenovo IdeaPad 1 is a basic Celeron laptop, fine for browsing and documents. The Dell 23-inch monitors and Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 LTE tablets round out the practical gear for a home office or small business refresh.

Networking types should check the HP 2920-48G switch. It’s a managed PoE+ unit with 48 gigabit ports, the kind of thing that usually costs real money new. If you’re building out a warehouse, workshop, or campus network, this could be the bargain of the lot. Allbids is running the sale in the ACT, so factor in pickup logistics before you bid.

  • Antiques, Art & Memorabilia Auction

    Antiques, Art & Memorabilia Auction

    Wed 19 Aug 2026 • ACT • 100 lots • AllBids

A mixed lot of antiques, art and memorabilia is going under the hammer via allbids in the ACT, with more than a dozen lots on offer. Highlights include a vintage Galaxy Invader 1000 handheld game by Futuretronics, a limited-edition Sturmanskie Amphibia mechanical diver watch (234/500), and five vials of uncut Lightning Ridge opals.

    More detail

The collectables side is strong here. The Galaxy Invader 1000 is a proper slice of late-70s gaming history, and the Sturmanskie Amphibia is a serious mechanical diver’s piece, not a fashion watch. Wrestling fans get a pair of vintage Nikolai Volkoff WWF figurines, while the Barbie lot includes boxed Teresa and Ken figures.

Jewellery and accessories cover a fair spread: a 14ct yellow gold and smoky quartz ring in size O, a 925 sterling silver Siam brooch and earrings set at 19.56gms, plus a sterling hematite pendant on a 40cm chain alongside a multistrand cultured pearl wire necklace. There’s also a nine-lot collection of gold and silver tone necklaces.

Pop culture odds and ends round it out. A vintage canvas Wonder Woman backpack, a Russell Super Coca-Cola yo-yo with its original spare string, and an unframed daybill poster for *Batteries Not Included* (a M.A.P.S. lithographic print) should draw a look. The opals are uncut, so they’re for someone who knows how to spot a stone’s potential. Closes 4 August.

  • Catering & Hospitality Equipment Auction

  • Wine Auctions Auction

    Wine Auctions Auction

    Fri 21 Aug 2026 • ACT • 61 lots • AllBids

A cellar of 68 wine lots is going to auction in the ACT, with the Lamborghini label headlining the lineup. Expect everything from single bottles of Luxe Titanio Cabernet Sauvignon Sangiovese to full cases of DJ Luminoso Pinot Noir Chardonnay Brut, plus a Magnum Lamborghini that should draw a crowd.

    More detail

Allbids has put together a wine auction that leans heavily on the flashy end of the bottle shop, and the Lamborghini range is the main event. The Luxe Titanio Cabernet Sauvignon Sangiovese carries a $199 RRP, while the Torami Cabernet Sauvignon Sangiovese sits at $178. If you’re after something with bubbles, the DJ Luminoso Pinot Noir Chardonnay Brut NV is listed at $289 per bottle, and it also appears as a six-pack case with a combined RRP of $1734.

Sparkling drinkers get plenty of options. The Legend Rose Metodo Classico Vintage Organic Sparkling Pinot Noir comes in a case of six, also totalling $1734, while The Legend Metodo Classico Vintage Organic Sparkling Pinot Noir is offered as a lot of three bottles at $867 total. There’s also a Magnum Lamborghini in the mix, which is worth chasing if you want something for a serious dinner party or a display shelf.

Bidding closes 14 August 2026, so there’s time to work through the list. Check the full lot details on the allbids site for vintage years and bottle sizes, and factor in any buyer’s premium before you commit. Wine auctions like this can throw up decent value if you stick to the cases rather than the single bottles.

  • Sports, Recreation & Fitness Auction

    Sports, Recreation & Fitness Auction

    Fri 21 Aug 2026 • ACT • 27 lots • AllBids

A solid lineup of bikes, scooters, and outdoor gear is hitting the block in the ACT, with allbids running the show. Expect a GIANT TRANCE X 29ER trail bike, a MALVERN STAR Oppy heritage model, and a SEGWAY NINEBOT Max G30 electric scooter among the 38 lots.

    More detail

The two-wheelers are the headline act here. The GIANT TRANCE X 29ER is a proper trail machine for anyone wanting a capable dual-suspension rig without paying retail. For a bit of nostalgia, the MALVERN STAR Oppy is a classic Aussie steel frame, while the TRINX Mountain Bike offers a more budget-friendly entry point. If you’re after something motorised, the SEGWAY NINEBOT Max G30 is a well-known commuter scooter with solid range, and there’s also the NINEBOT F-Series and a WOLONGGU electric scooter to consider.

Beyond the bikes, the lot list covers the rest of the active lifestyle. The MADD GEAR Origin Team stunt scooter is a genuine brand for the younger riders or park enthusiasts. For camping, a KINGS Swag is always handy for a weekend away, and it’s a brand that holds its value in the second-hand market. With 38 lots, it’s a mixed bag of recreational gear that suits anyone kitting themselves out for summer. Check the photos carefully for condition on the electric scooters, as battery health is the main thing to factor into your bid.

  • Charity & Community Auctions Auction

    Charity & Community Auctions Auction

    Thu 27 Aug 2026 • ACT • 23 lots • AllBids

A 40-lot charity auction is putting up a mix of lifestyle gear and once-off experiences, with allbids running the sale from the ACT. Standouts include a Kenwood Chef mixer with manual and cookbook, plus live-auction lots like a Chubb Australian Open 2027 experience and a Trek for two to Machu Picchu or Kokoda with a $2500 Flight Centre voucher.

    More detail

The live auction portion is where the big-ticket items sit. The Chubb Australian Open 2027 Experience is the headline, and the Multicut Diamond Charm Necklace offers something for jewellery buyers. There’s also a Mossology art piece from Ronan Moss and a Contentious Character Urban Winery Experience for the Canberra region.

For those after practical gear, the 8 Classes Pilates Pack at KX Kingston is a solid local option, and the Kenwood Chef mixer comes with the instruction manual and cookbook, so it’s ready to go straight out of the box. The 90 Days to Dominance digital marketing package from Region Media is aimed at small businesses looking to sharpen their online presence.

The trek-for-two lot is the one to weigh up, as it includes a choice of Machu Picchu or Kokoda plus the Flight Centre voucher for flights. Bidding closes 14 August 2026, so there’s time to pick your lot and decide how far you want to push it.

Wed 26 Aug 2026 • Fyshwick, ACT • Grays Online

A 2020 Cub Longreach Off Road Camper is up in Fyshwick, ACT, with Grays Online handling the sale. It’s a proper off-road rig, so check the lot for the full spec sheet, including the kitchen setup, water tank, and suspension details.

    More detail

This Cub Longreach is built for serious dirt miles, not just the caravan park. The 2020 model comes with the usual Cub toughness, a full off-road chassis, and the kind of independent suspension you want when the bitumen runs out. Inside, you’re looking at a solid layout with a decent bench, storage, and the essentials for a week away from power.

Grays has listed this as a single caravan lot in their rolling format, so the close date is still to be confirmed. Worth checking the photos for any stone chips or wear underneath, because these things get used properly. If you’re after a no-fuss camper that’ll tow behind a dual-cab without complaining, this is one to pencil in.
