FAQ
Which auction houses sell cars in Canberra?
Pickles and Manheim operate ACT vehicle yards, with Pickles in Fyshwick running regular fleet disposal and general vehicle sales. AllBids also lists Canberra vehicle lots, and Grays is available online for ACT buyers continuously.
Are government fleet vehicles common in Canberra auctions?
Yes. Canberra is Australia’s largest source of federal government fleet disposals. ATO, Defence, and other Commonwealth agency vehicles regularly come through Pickles Fyshwick. These are typically well-maintained and properly documented.
Can I inspect vehicles before bidding in Canberra?
Yes (except Pickles). Most offer inspection windows before their sales.
Trends & Insights
The biggest structural news this week comes out of Pickles, with the announcement of a new weekly HMS auction schedule starting August 2026. The revised cadence introduces a sale every week across HMS products, including vehicles, which effectively doubles the regularity of that channel for buyers and sellers alike (Pickles AU, Aug 20). For trade buyers in the ACT, this signals a shift toward more consistent supply lines, though the August 2026 start date means we have a long runway before the new rhythm takes hold.
In the interim, the late August calendar is packed with activity. Pickles has multiple car and truck auctions scheduled, with bidding for SUVs, sedans, and trucks opening or closing between August 21 and 26 across Australia (Pickles Auctions, Aug 20). That includes a notable charity angle: an unused 2026 Kenworth T909 is being auctioned on behalf of the It’s A Bloke Thing Foundation via PicklesLIVE starting August 21 (Pickles Auctions Facebook, Aug 20). It is a high-profile lot that could draw interest beyond the usual commercial buyers.
Manheim is holding steady with ongoing weekly used car auctions, covering passenger, SUV, commercial, and damaged vehicles nationally, with listings active in Perth and other locations (Manheim AU, Aug 21). The steady state of weekly listings remains the backbone of the market, even as public reporting on clearance rates and price movements for ACT-focused stock stays thin. Salvage and used car auctions continue to run in the NSW/ACT regions, but the data trail is quiet, so buyers should lean on direct auction house listings rather than market-wide assumptions.
Watch for the Kenworth T909 charity result and the wave of late August truck and SUV closures, as those outcomes will give the clearest read on commercial appetite heading into September.
