FAQ
What is a repairable write-off?
A vehicle written off by an insurer because repair costs exceed a threshold relative to value, but where the vehicle is structurally sound and repairable. In most states these can be re-registered after an inspection by an approved assessor. More here.
What is a statutory write-off?
A vehicle with structural or safety damage so severe that it cannot be re-registered for road use in any state. These can only be sold for parts or crushing. Know which type you’re bidding on before proceeding. More here
Can I re-register a repairable write-off?
Yes, but the process and cost varies by state. NSW, VIC, and QLD all have specific WOVR (Written-Off Vehicle Register) rules. Check your state’s transport authority requirements before bidding on any write-off. More here
What’s the typical discount on a repairable write-off?
Commonly 30–50% below the equivalent clean-title vehicle, depending on damage type and extent. Hail damage write-offs with no structural impact often represent the best value.
Trends & Insights
Salvage auction volume is peaking this week as IAA Australia schedules multiple statewide sales for late May. The VIC, TAS, SA & WA Salvage Sale on May 25 alone features hundreds of vehicles, followed by the QLD, NSW, ACT & NT Salvage Sale and National Salvage Sale running from May 26 to 29 across branches (IAA Australia, May 25). This marks one of the most concentrated sale windows in recent months, with IAA also expanding its online real-time bidding infrastructure to support the influx of inventory from all states (IAA Australia, May 23).
Repairable electric vehicles are emerging as the hottest category in the Australian salvage market. Pickles Auctions reports strong demand and increasing competition for repairable EV stock, with buyers taking serious notice of the category in its latest QAR insights (Pickles Auctions, May 26). This is driving rising prices and tighter margins for resellers, shifting the calculus on which write-offs get rebuilt versus parted out. Pickles continues to run salvage motor vehicle sales nationwide across cars, motorcycles and more, reinforcing its position as Australia’s largest used asset marketplace in the sector (Pickles Auctions, May 26).
Manheim is also keeping the market well supplied with over 500 repairable write-off and exempt salvage vehicles listed nationally this week. The weekly catalog includes 545 lots in the repairable category, plus state-specific damage auctions such as Perth Damage (47 lots) and Premium Damage (117 lots) active now (Manheim Australia, May 24). The sustained volume across all three major auction houses points to a steady pipeline of insurance total losses feeding buyer demand. Watch for further upward momentum on repairable EV prices as more buyers enter that segment in the week ahead.

Rod’s Tips
Hail damage write-offs are the sweet spot for value buyers. A vehicle written off for hail damage typically has full mechanical integrity. For the insurer, they simply can’t justify the panel repair cost. A paintless dent repair specialist can often fix hail damage for a fraction of the write-off discount.
Always pull the WOVR record before bidding on any write-off. The NEVDIS or your state’s transport authority database shows the recorded damage type. A mismatch between what you’re told and what the register shows is a red flag.
Pickles and Manheim handle the highest volume of salvage vehicles in Australia. Their insurance partner programs produce consistent supply which is useful for benchmarking what write-offs are genuinely selling for.
Get repair quotes before you bid, not after. Call two or three repairers with the damage description and photos. Build re-registration costs into your ceiling as well as they vary significantly by state.

National Online Salvage Caravans, Recreational & Marine
More detail
This is a national online salvage sale, so expect everything from repairable write-offs to storm-damaged stock. The standout is the 2024 Jayco All Terrain, barely a year old, which could be a steal if the damage is cosmetic. For water lovers, the 2022 Seadoo Fish Pro is a serious fishing rig, while the 2021 Maverick Ranger and 2017 Aura Titanium offer variety for off-road or touring buyers.
Older units like the 2013 Jayco Starcraft and 2009 Jayco Expanda Outback are ideal for someone chasing a project or cheap parts. There is also a tandem axle enclosed box trailer with no current plates, and a custom trailer thrown in. Bidders should check the salvage classification carefully, as repairs and compliance may vary by state. Close date is June 3, 2026, so you have time to inspect the listings.

National Online Salvage Motorcycles
More detail
Pickles is running a national online salvage motorcycle auction, offering over a dozen bikes from various locations across Australia. This is a mixed bag of late-model machines, from a 2025 Kawasaki Z500 and a 2023 Indian Scout to smaller scooters like the 2020 Honda Dio and Kymco Agility 50 4T. The salvage status means these bikes have history, so factor in potential repair costs.
Standout lots include the 2020 Harley-Davidson CVO Road King, a premium touring model, and the 2017 BMW S 1000 RR, a serious sportbike. The 2025 BMW F 900 GS is nearly new, while the 2023 CFMOTO 300NK offers a budget-friendly option. Check each listing for damage details and location before bidding.

Various Location Salvage Honda Postie Bike Clearance
More detail
Pickles is clearing out a stack of Honda Postie Bikes from salvage yards around the country. These are the iconic CT110 workhorses, the same bikes that have delivered mail through rain, dust, and rough back roads for decades. Most lots are listed as repairable write-offs or parts-only, so don’t expect a turn-key runner. That said, the CT110 is famously tough and simple to work on, making these a solid bet for anyone with a shed and some mechanical know-how.
The lot list includes bikes from various years, with damage ranging from front-end impacts to flood exposure. A few units may still have intact engines, wheels, or body panels that are getting harder to find as these bikes age. If you’re restoring a Postie or just need a cheap spare motor, this clearance is worth a look.
Bidding closes on 7 June 2026. Check the Pickles website for listings in your state and inspect before you bid. These are sold as-is, so factor in pickup and transport costs from the salvage yard.

National Salvage Construction, Earthmoving & Agricultural Equipment
More detail
Pickles is running a national salvage auction with a solid mix of plant and agricultural equipment. The standout is the 2024 Caterpillar 336 excavator, barely a year old. That’s backed by a 2019 Doosan DX380LC-3 and a 2010 Cat 320D, so there’s heavy iron for earthmoving contractors.
On the ag side, a Case IH Farmall 60B tractor and multiple Toro mowers – including a GroundsMaster 3200 and an STX38 – offer options for farm or turf work. A 2004 Haulotte Compact 10DX cherry picker and a TR Rock Breaker add versatility. Bidding is open across various national locations, so check the site for your nearest pickup. Closes June 10.

National Online Salvage Construction, Earthmoving & Agricultural Equipment
More detail
This is a national online salvage auction from Pickles, covering construction, earthmoving and agricultural equipment spread across multiple sites. With only two lots listed, it is a tight, targeted sale for buyers chasing heavy gear at salvage prices.
The standout is the 1999 Caterpillar 990 Series II, a big-wheel loader built for hard yards in mining or quarry work. The second lot is a New Holland machine, likely from their agricultural or construction range. Both are sold as-is, so factor in inspection and transport costs before bidding. Closes 1 July 2026.

SA Online Salvage
More detail
Pickles is running this SA Online Salvage auction from Adelaide, closing 3 June 2026. The mix leans heavily on repairable write-offs and older daily drivers, so there is potential for a bargain if you have the time to source parts or do the work yourself.
Standout lots include the near-new 2024 Toyota RAV4 Cruiser, which will attract serious interest. For Holden fans, both a 2008 Commodore Lumina and a 2008 Commodore Omega are in the lineup. The 2015 Subaru XV and 2018 Renault Captur Zen add some modern crossover appeal, while the 2003 and 2009 Toyota Corollas are classic cheap fixer-uppers. Check each lot’s damage report before bidding; salvage grading will determine whether you need a tow truck or just a set of spanners.

7/2021 Network RV Caravan 24ft – Statutory Write-off
More detail
This is a 2021 Network RV Caravan, measuring 24 feet, and it’s classified as a statutory write-off. That means it’s been damaged and is not roadworthy in its current state. But for a buyer with the skills to repair or the need for a donor van, the potential is there.
The van is relatively new, so components like the chassis, cabinetry, appliances, and fittings could be valuable. A statutory write-off can’t be re-registered in Australia, so this is strictly for parts or off-road use. The auction closes on 2 June 2026, so there’s time to inspect or ask questions if you’re serious about a rebuild or salvage.

Perth Salvage Vehicles
More detail
Pickles is putting up a mixed field of 12-plus salvage vehicles at their Bibra Lake depot. The range covers everything from a near-new 2024 Mini Cooper C to a 2011 Ford Falcon XT, so there is something for different budgets and skill levels.
The standout is the 2023 Toyota Landcruiser GR Sport, a high-demand off-roader that could be a bargain if the damage is cosmetic. For performance buyers, the 2016 Subaru WRX Premium and the 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser both offer strong resale potential. Workhorse options include the 2010 Toyota Hilux SR and the 2013 Ford Ranger XL, popular for parts or a rebuild.
Buyers should inspect in person before bidding. Salvage grading varies, and repair costs can blow out quickly. The auction closes on 3 June 2026, so get down to Bibra Lake for a look.

Hobart Salvage Vehicles
More detail
Pickles is clearing a dozen-plus damaged cars in Moonah, Hobart, with the hammer falling on June 9. This is a mixed bag leaning toward newer repairable write-offs, plus a few older models worth a look if you know a panel beater. The standout lot is the 2024 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium, a near-new SUV that should attract serious bidding. The 2023 Toyota Landcruiser Workmate is another headliner, given that model’s resale value even after a hit.
For tradies, the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton GLX and the 2004 Toyota Hilux offer cheap ute options if the damage is cosmetic. The 2016 Kia Cerato S and 2011 Toyota Camry are likely budget-friendly repairable sedans. The rest includes a Holden Commodore, Volkswagen Golf, 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan, 2013 Ford Focus Trend, 2007 Nissan Pathfinder ST-L, and a 2020 Toyota Fortuner GXL.
Inspect before you bid. Salvage vehicles at this site often have hidden structural damage, but the newer stock means parts availability is strong. Pickles runs a standard online auction, so register early and check the condition reports.
